چکیده
We report the results of the first joint search for gravitational waves by the TAMA and LIGO collaborations. We looked for millisecond-scale unmodelled gravitational-wave bursts in 473hr of coincident data collected during early 2003. No candidate signals were found. We set an upper limit of 0.12 events per day on the rate of gravitational-wave transients, at 90% confidence level. Using simulated signals, we estimate that our network was sensitive to gravitational-wave bursts with root-sum-square amplitude above approximately 2 × 10 Hz−1/2 in the frequency band [700,2000] Hz. We describe the details of this collaborative search, with particular emphasis on its advantages and disadvantages compared to searches by LIGO and TAMA separately using the same data. We also highlight some of the challenges of searching for gravitational-wave bursts using a network of detectors with different sensitivities and orientations.

Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory ~LIGO! is a joint project of the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is designed to detect gravitational waves from astrophysical sources such as supernova and black holes. The LIGO project constructed observatories at two sites in the U.S. Each...
متن کاملThe Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Project
Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity (and all other relativistic theories of gravity) predict Gravitational Waves (GW). To date gravitational waves have not been observed directly (unambiguously). The emission mechanisms and interaction phenomena for gravitational waves are very different than for electromagnetic waves. Most GW sources will not be seen electromagnetically and converse...

LIGO: The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory The LIGO Scientific Collaboration The goal of the Laser Interferometric Gravitational-WaveObservatory (LIGO) is to detect and study gravitational waves of astrophysical origin. Direct detection of gravitational waves holds the promise of testing general relativity in the strong-field limit, of providing a new probe of exotic objects ...
متن کاملFirst targeted search for gravitational-wave bursts from core-collapse supernovae in data of first-generation laser interferometer detectors
We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts coincident with two core-collapse supernovae observed optically in 2007 and 2011. We employ data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), the Virgo gravitational-wave observatory, and the GEO 600 gravitational-wave observatory. The targeted core-collapse supernovae were selected on the basis of (1) proxim...
